why you have to trust the road you cannot see
on following your heart, letting go of certainty, and taking the next step along the way
you’re allowed to be a work in progress.
and as i prepare to move my family to spain, i think this is what life is teaching me more than anything.
i’m learning to let go.
to trust the decisions i’m making, while also knowing i’m allowed to change my mind.
there are so many unknowns ahead of me, and instead of trying to control each one, i’m learning to meet them as they come.
to see what unfolds,
to try something new,
and give myself permission to reevaluate along the way.
i think this is maybe what the growth mindset is all about.
allowing life to flow towards you rather than trying to control where it takes you.
one of my favorite affirmations:
the right people and situations are constantly arriving to help me achieve my goals.
there is something so heart-centered about living this way.
leaning into the unknown and not allowing the worrying mind to take hold.
not allowing doubt to convince us that we need to have all the answers before we begin.
because for me, this is also a spiritual path.
it’s being clear in my heart and free in my mind.
when i remember to take the time to put one hand on my heart and one hand on my belly, to feel what my body wants me to know in any given moment, i am able to come home to myself.
it’s a simple practice, really.
the practice of being a spirit in a human body.
and this is how i slow down enough to feel the light of my soul, the light of the divine, shining through me and towards me.
and then i ask myself, how i can share this light with others, both in physical ways and energetic ones.
how can we simply be a force of light in the world?
sometimes we will misstep or make a wrong turn.
that’s part of it too.
but the important thing is being humble enough to notice.
being willing to shift when something no longer feels aligned, without judging yourself for having tried.
because all of life is one giant work in progress.
we are all just little works in progress, here for the ride.
we are all riding on this little blue planet earth, much like one might ride a spaceship, our home is a shining blue pearl in the star-studded sky.
and so, maybe following your dreams isn’t about knowing exactly what they are or how you will get there.
maybe it’s about moving towards them with an open heart, a willingness to change course, and enough trust to take the next step.
i think that’s the only way to follow one’s dreams.
to go about it in this simple little way, with a lot of prayer and intention.
like the old quaker song,
‘tis a gift to be simple, ‘tis a gift to be free…
and with faith that what is meant to meet us along the way will find us.
just follow the yellow brick road.
lean into that feeling of uncertainty.
underneath the pitter-patter of your worried little heart, there is an ocean of calm.
it is waiting patiently for you to jump in and take a skinny dip into her deep blue depths.
let the universe take you by the hand and lead you on your way.
today might be a hard day,
and yesterday may have been even harder.
as jason mraz sings in one of his songs:
may the best of your todays be the worst of your tomorrows…
so just keep humming your song and walking along.
you got this.
i believe in you.
i believe in us.
together.

if this resonated with you, i’d love for you to join me here and share your thoughts.

We moved to Spain six years ago from the Netherlands as the country didn't felt like home anymore. Best move ever, Spain is such a warm social country, the opposite of Nothern Europe. I hope you make this move to Spain come true as I'm sure you and your family will love it here!
